Getting to the National Park
You can find Skaftafell National Park just off the ring road (route 1) between Hofn ans Vik.
Attractions
Vatnajökull
This is Iceland's biggest glacier and it is to be found in Skaftafell National Park. With an average ice thickness of 400 m and an maximum thickness of 1,000 m, it is classified as an ice cap glacier.
Because of recent volcanic activities and the climate changes the Vatnajökull is shrinking.
This glacier covers more than 8 % of the entire country.
Svartifoss
This is one of the most popular sights of the park, the Svartifoss (Black Falls) is a waterfall surrounded by lava columns.

There are a lot of tracks in the Skaftafell region, that can be walked.

There is a considerable bird life in the area, so you can spot birds in the Skaftafell region. You can find the Common Snipe, Common Red shank, Razorbills and more.
