The native Tenggerese people who live around the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park are indigenous to the area and still practice ancient Hindu beliefs.
Around the time of the Upcara Kasodo (Kasodo ceremony), which is held every year in December or January at full moon, the most important ritual takes place. Trough this ceremony the natives invoke the blessings of the gods, to be spared from various deceases.
They have to climb down the sides of the crater and they have to catch the offerings that are thrown into the crater by the other natives, otherwise they don't earn the blessings of the gods. Often a member of the community falls down to the crater, with fatal consequences.
